This Dysfunktion Junktion concert took place some time in 2002 at Jake’s Roadhouse in Decatur, GA. I had been playing with the band for just under a year, and we were performing a lot of the material that would end up recorded on the Butler Studio Sessions. This includes Matthew William’s fantastic jazz themed instrumental Grimey, and my Primus-tinged song Sank. Also of note is Gotta Go which eventually made its way to the stage with Blueground Undergrass.
There are some unique aspects to this show. First up it was a guest saxophone performance by Mark Devokaitis. It also featured one of the few songs written by the one and only Jason McPanko in the form of the surf flavored J.W.C.S. This was an acronym for John Wayne Chase Scene. This song leads into a great cover of Kenny Roger’s Tulsa Turnaround. Panko is by far one of the most entertaining singers of all time.
This was a rare period where I played a 5-string Ibanez bass. It had active electronics and I always felt like I was trying to get a more aggressive sound out of it than it would actually give me. I did like that low B string though. Mainly for its low D note which I use on Afro Blue and Funky Trane.
The jams get big on the 17 minute Lookin Around, and the 16 minute cover of Chef’s Love Gravy. The highlight for me is definably the medley of The Other One>Dear Mr. Fantasy>Afro Blue. The energy is high and the segue ways are buttery.
Please forgive the occasional skip. These were ripped from ancient CDs!
