This is a very special release from 2004 featuring Magnolia. This band based in Carrollton, GA was a Brit-Pop flavored indie-pop band fronted by Guitarist Michael Butler and Drummer Walt Entrekin.
I joined this band right after my time with West Georgia jam titan’s Dysfunktion Junktion. The stylistic shift was deliberate and beneficial. I had learned so much about being an improvisor, soloist and entertainer from DJ, but knew from their previous projects that Michael and Walt could offer me another skillset in songcraft.
The next couple of years were exactly what I hoped they would be. I was learning restraint. Focusing on crafting good parts, and even singing a few of my own songs. The band released the Back to Before EP, and 14 Maybes Full length during my run with the band. We did the EP as a trio and then added my dear friend Jason McPanko as an additional guitarist and vocalist for the full length.
Magnolia also benefitted from access to Michael’s basement studio. The playlist below features a rehearsal for a CD release show, and captures a very special time in my musical history.
